Our pre-requisites have been established after thoughtful deliberation based upon data, and continued review. It is in the best interests of students to be enrolled in courses for which they are ready and prepared so they can experience success. All placement decisions are final.

1. When will we be notified about math placements?
Parents and students will be notified of their math placement along with report cards via Genesis when the system rolls over to the next academic year, typically in the first week or so of July..
2. How can I find out the placement scores for my child?
Placement scores are shared along with the placement decision in letters uploaded to Genesis.
3. Do you use NJSLA scores to determine placement?
Typically, we do not use NJSLA scores for placement purposes. (Please note that a 4 indicates that a student meets grade level expectations, not that they are ready for acceleration, and if a student does not pass the NJSLA, it is a cause for concern.)
4. Is there a deadline for requesting a review of placement?
Yes. All requests must be made before July 30.
5. Will there be another opportunity for a change of placement at the beginning of the next school year?
Yes. Typically we administer a pre-test to students at the beginning of the year. If students are able to score over 90% on the pre-test, we will consider making a placement change to the next level.
Please note: We do not publish/share the pre-assessment scores. If a student does not do well, it is not a cause for concern, we will be teaching the concepts and skills included on the pre-test during the school year.
6. What is included on the pre-test?
The pre-test questions address the standards of the course. For example, the pre-test for Math 6 will address all the standards in grade 6, Pre-Algebra pre-test will address 7th and 8th grade standards.
6a. What is the purpose of the pre-test?
The primary purpose of the pre-test is for us to establish a baseline, understand the trends in the knowledge of our student population. It helps make curriculum and pacing decisions. The secondary purpose is to verify placements. If a student is able to demonstrate proficiency by scoring over 90% on the pre-test, then it indicates that they are ready to move on to the next course.
7. What if my child does very well once the school year is in full swing? Will there be a change in placement then or later in the year?
It is our expectation that students do well with teacher instruction in the class they they are placed. This does not indicate that they are ready for acceleration. Student placement will not be changed because a student is performing well in a class.
8. Can you retest my child during the summer?
Unfortunately, we are not in a position to retest students. Placement depends on multiple criteria and cannot be duplicated. There are plenty of opportunities for advancement as students progress through the grades.
9. How can I support/supplement what is being taught in class?
Please refer to the list of resources listed.
10. Where can I find information about placement criteria for HS math and science?
Please refer to the HS webpage for this information.
11. What about summer courses for Algebra 1 and Geometry for middle school students?
Please refer to the Position Statement and Rationale page.
